Today is the day for the impatient runner – the registrations for this year’s runs to celebrate the establishment of the Republic through sport have now opened. The 5th annual Sokol Run of the Republic will welcome Sokol organisation members and the general public to the biggest running festival held on 28th October. There will be runs at dozens of locations across the country and abroad and there is something for everyone – so don’t leave it too long, register for your race here and see you at the start!
On the day of the October national holiday, both adults in the main race starting at 2 pm and children on shorter courses will get a chance to enjoy the Sokol running tradition. Sokol members and the general public, professional and amateur runners – everyone can join in the race. This year it will be all about celebrating and enjoying 28 October the way Sokol members like the best: by sport! “There are various running events, but I dare say that no other run is so closely linked to the history of the Republic,” says Hana Moučková, Mayor of the Czech Sokol Union, in invitation to the Sokol Run of the Republic. “The atmosphere is unique also because there are Sokol symbols replete with history everywhere and running under them is a real experience.”
Last year, almost 7,000 runners enjoyed the atmosphere of the Sokol Run of the Republic at 61 locations in the Czech Republic and abroad. This year, the organisers of the event, which is supported by the Czech Sokol Union, have set a goal to expand it to more than 70 locations with at least 8,000 runners taking part. Be one of them and join your chosen race! Hluboká nad Vltavou, Telč and Kroměříž are among the Czech participating towns, and abroad it’s, for example, Zurich and Brazil. The list of races can be found on the event website and on the map below – but more are signing up still.
“Everyone can choose a race to suit them, ranging from 3 to 10 km. We will run through some of the most beautiful places in the Czech Republic,” says Lukáš Rohan, slalom canoeist and one of the ambassadors of the Sokol Run of the Republic 2022. Among the other celebrities you can meet at the 28th October celebration are Paralympic cyclist Jiří Ježek, fencer Alexander Choupenitch and radio host Lucie Výborná.
This year again, participants of the Sokol Run of the Republic will have the opportunity to do good. Their aid will go to 14-year-old Anetka from Liberec, who suffers from amblyopia in her right eye and her family situation is rather difficult. In spite of all this, she loves sport and as a member of the Czech Twirling School at T.J. Sokol Vysočany she commutes to Prague for training sessions. In order for Anetka to continue doing sport and improve, she needs special coaching connected with rehabilitation and complex exercises for spatial orientation. You can now contribute towards this by registering for your race.
As the Sokol motto goes: Forward, not a step backward! Choose your race, and see you at the start on October 28th. Register now by clicking the “Register now” button. See you there!
